The lace videos in this section were made with with John and Kathy Hensel, initially in Oregon and later in California. John is a professional who worked in film-making in Hollywood before taking a post as cameraman in a company in Oregon making training videos. Kathy’s interest in lacemaking gave rise to their producing a series of videos on different topics. They first approached me at the 2004 IOLI Convention, where I taught a class on Color in Torchon Lace, and this resulted in the video of the same name being shot in March 2006. Since then I have made four more, the latest being Introductory Skills in Bucks Point Lace, released this year.

Filming ‘Color in Bedfordshire Lace’

I find this professional movie-making interesting and enjoyable, but — make no mistake about it — it is quite demanding. The set-up is certainly more elaborate than your mobile (cellphone): three cameras in different positions, proper studio lighting, and of course patterns and samples have to be prepared in advance. We typically work five full days filming, with frequent retakes needed when I trip over my tongue or dry up. After the filming John does the editing, which I check for mistakes, and then we decide how to fix them.

These (and their other) videos can be purchased through the Hensels’ website. However for lacemakers resident in Britain, I have a limited number that can be obtained directly at a special UK price. They are available either as DVDs or on USB Memory Sticks.
